Have you ever noticed the "Kilroy" dude that wanders around this site?
If you are a WWII Buff .. and have the time .. click on Kilroys Story link in his signature ! You have to find him, do a search , members, or something, he just pop's up here and there and does not say much except:
Kilroy was here!

Near the end of WWII, Adolf Hitler was paranoid as sin about one particular insurgent that seemed to get into everything secure in Nazi germany, he had his best men actively searching for this spy, and had ordered all his troops to shoot the menace. The "spy" Hitler was looking for was none other than kilroy. GI's in occupied territory and spies in the german army were vandalizing nazi bases and equipment with the little kilroy drawing, along with the words, "Killroy was here..." It wasn't meant as anything more than a prank, but by the last year of hitler's command, there was so much graffitti that he thought kilroy was able to get into any secure area, and feared for his life, thinking, "Kilroy is going to get me!" It's nice to think that a little bit of vandalism helped end world war II.

I had no idea about this... Then again Hitler really was a completely insane idiot... I remember seeing Kilroy in a couple of WW2 movies on occasion (end of Kelly's heros for example) but I never really thought too much of it until I read this. Now I wonder just how many little things like this there are out there to find out about. By things I mean little tidbits of info that were so common and well known to the average GI that they didnt bother writing it down and now we've forgotten about it.
My hat's off to Tbar for finding this and adding it into the site. Lets hope the Enigma team adds in a few Kilroys too.

I highly recommend this to everyone .. not just WWII history buffs. The way the story is layed out, not only explains a little about Kilroy, but also really gives you an idea of how life was during that time and the choices Americans had to make .. Go to War, or get a War Job.

I still on occaision draw him in various places, i believe he had a "brother" in the viet nam war named Kilgore, but he wasnt as popular.
Heres some more ww2 trivia, who can tell me where the phrase "The whole nine yards" comes from?

Well.. in my era it was referred to as a whole machine gun belt in aircraft or 5o caliber machine gun belts we grunts used. If you gave them hell and all you had .. its was the full nine yards. Unfortunately.. it also meant at times getting the 'whole nine yards"
Today most people think its a football term.
Some say its origins are nautical in that it refers to the yards of the sail, other say its the load of a cement truck, etc and so forth.
But.. we all know .. its a GI term
