Destroyer Draft

Friday when I was sick I watched U-571. I was wondering, how deep is the average destroyer's draft? The sub appeared to just barely clear the can's keel, but just before the sub went under it the cheif called out "20 Meters" A can that draws 60 feet of water? or was this just Hollywood?

But the hood draws slightly less than 10 meters! Why would a tin can draw twice as much?

The WW2 US destroyers I'm familiar with drew anywhere between 12 and 18 ft. So, 4-6 meters seems about right.
