You need to be a Commander I think. I played USN surface as a DE righ through to the last mission, so it is perfectly feasible - you just have to manage your assets carefully.

this should have been addressed in the latest patch, make sure you have it installed.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try replaying missions 6 and 7. This game is too cool to not play, but I really want the Jackson in mission 8.

BTW, is there a way to figure out how many points you have/need? If not, can anyone give me an idea of when they were promoted (which missions)?

Forgot something in my last post: I've installed the latest patch (that I can find , but no fix. All in all, though, the patch has been a huge upgrade (it got me back into the game!), so I've got no complaints. After playing a few other campaigns, I've decided that it's definitely worth restarting the American campaign to get the DD in mission 8.

I'm running into this problem, and wondering if it is supposed to be difficult to make commander by mission 8, if so, I'm still unclear as to weather I must restart the whole campaign and kick ass on six and seven, or just replay them til I do them well (btw, if I can get a purple heart for being wounded, does that mean the more, or the fewer hits your ship takes, the more points you get towards promotion???)

You have to install the 15MB mini patch, this issue should to my knowledge be fixed.

You might have to start the campaign from mission 1.
